Lightning
is the one that got it all started. I bought him in 2001, while still being
held warm by his dam. In utero, is what they call that now, back then I had no idea. His dam Sierra was the most gentle horse in the stable and all the
beginners rode her. I didn’t like that I had to ride other horses during her
pregnancy, so I decided I needed my own horse. Her foal was the obvious choice.
I knew nothing about horses, let alone pedigrees, health problems or raising a
young colt. Lightning had the same gentle personality as his dam and even
though he still challenges me sometimes, we always worked it out and he became
the most reliable horse many people have ever met. He has been a “beginners
horse” from the start. We did everything together. We’ve walked and ridden
thousands of hours and kilometers, have been to countless shows, both locally
and across the borders to the European Championships. We visited clinics and a
good few trainers and enjoyed many disciplines. He’s worked cows, ran
endurances races, drives a carriage, teaches anyone to ride, especially people
who are afraid, children and even older people. His latest new discipline is
Extreme Trail, in which we’ve found our niche in which he really excels.
Lightning will turn 18 in 2019 and slowly he will step aside for the future
generation while he can enjoy his retirement on easy rides, playing with the
youngsters and keeping his “herd” under control.
